Colour-coded velocity feedback during in-season ice hockey training

In brief
This ten-week study compared colour-coded velocity-loss feedback with concentric-velocity feedback during back squats. The colour-coded group completed more repetitions and showed larger gains in one-repetition maximum squat and countermovement-jump height. No group differences were found for the other strength, power or muscle-thickness outcomes.
What was studied
Thirty-five semi-professional ice hockey players were assigned to colour-coded velocity-loss feedback or concentric-velocity feedback during ten weeks of in-season back-squat training.
What the source reported
- 01
The colour-coded group completed more repetitions across all three sets per squat session.
- 02
Its reported improvements were larger for one-repetition maximum squat and countermovement-jump height.
- 03
No group differences were observed for isometric pull, leg-press strength and power, or muscle thickness.
How to interpret the findings
Training volume differed between the groups, so the feedback format cannot be separated from the extra work completed. The author recommended research under volume-matched conditions.
